Nancy Drew Event at Changing Hands Bookstore

The Nancy Drew 80th Birthday event at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ was held at 7pm tonight on Monday, November 8. Members of the local AZ Sleuths chapter attended and I spoke at the event plus we had a very nice sized crowd at close to or over 50!

The store arranged a scavenger hunt and we had prizes for those participating, I brought party favors and cupcakes with Nancy Drew picks on them:

My talk ranged from how I got into collecting and writing about Nancy Drew to the history behind Nancy Drew, collecting information, and a look at how Nancy Drew changed over the years plus Things We Learned From Nancy Drew and quotes from my book, Clues for Real Life: The Classic Wit and Wisdom of Nancy Drew.

Some members in the audience including Sleuth Dede

Edward Stratemeyer looms behind me, the creator of Nancy Drew.

Sleuths Tina and Beth Marie

Sleuths Judy and Gail

We enjoyed our time at Changing Hands and for those of you who attended, we hope you had lots of fun!

There was a great article on the event in the East Valley Tribune with some images of my collection--click here to read it.

Nancy Drew Sleuths at Bouchercon 2010

The Bouchercon World Mystery Convention will take place Oct. 14 through Oct. 17 in San Francisco. Being that this year is the 80th anniversary of Nancy Drew, they are devoting one of their panels to Nancy Drew and there will be a party too.

Sleuth Penny Warner and I will be on the Nancy Drew panel along with Cornelia Read, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and moderator Kate White. The panel is on Friday October 15 at 10:00am.

Penny and I will be throwing a fabulous 80th anniversary Nancy Drew party Saturday October 16 at 4:30pm with fun favors for those attending and a mystery to solve. And all through the event, I will be in the Book Room most of the time at our Nancy Drew Sleuths merchandise table with our Nancy Drew merchandise and info about our group and our conventions.

If you are in the San Francisco area, come and join us! Visit the Bouchercon 2010 website for info on registration and day passes.

Sleuth Members Essentials Kit at our website!

Sleuths,

Up now in our "members only" section of our website - www.ndsleuths.com, at the bottom of the main "news" page is a Sleuth Members Essentials Kit consisting of pdf/doc files for your use with library/book displays, Nancy Drew talks you're giving, promoting your collections to local/national media, giving interviews to the press, book club meetings, and other projects/activities you're involved with.

The files encompass Nancy Drew's history, fun facts, famous quotes, trivia, things we've learned from Nancy, information about our group and our conventions and more! There's also a handy fill-in-the blank press release for your convenience if you want to highlight your collection to the local press and inspire a local collector piece. And a spiffy press release if you have a book club in your area you want to promote to the media. These files are perfect for printing out and hanging up for displays, for reference in giving talks, and there are flyers to print up to hand out to people for joining our group or subscribing to The Sleuth. You can open the files and print or directly save them to your hard drive for printing. The Press releases are Word Files, so you can add to them and customize them as need be.

This year we've had a lot more members involved in these kinds of activities who have been using my 80th press kits, Sleuth flyers, etc.. so I thought it would be a great idea to centralize all this info for you to be able to go and grab it when you need it. Keep me posted if you're using it and what's going on with your display/talk/event/etc. and I may be able to further help you promote it via my contacts with the publishers/licensees and even get products for raffles/giveaways/etc.

Nancy Drew Event at UC San Diego in August!

If you're nearby or in San Diego, the Univ. of San Diego is putting on a Nancy Drew exhibit in August - 1st through 31st with Nancy Drew collectibles/books on display. They're having live events on August 15 and 17 with lots of fun stuff going on including a "radio" interview with me where they'll phone me and we'll chat for the audience to hear!

Here's a blurb from their website which has the dates/times/directions:

"This summer, we celebrate all things Nancy Drew. Does she represent ''girl power'' better than any other pop icon? Is she our favorite feminist? This exhibit of Nancy Drew books, Nancy Drew memorabilia and serious Nancy Drew scholarship will feature a live event with refreshments prepared from the Nancy Drew Cookbook. At the live event, classic Nancy Drew mysteries will be performed in the style of old time radio drama entertainment. Actors from San Diego's Write Out Loud project will assist. Sounds & music provided by Scott Paulson and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra. A live phone-in radio interview with Nancy Drew expert Jenn Fisher is featured at the live events."

I hope some of you can make it--I'd love to get photos of the exhibit and live events if you can attend for The Sleuth and this Blog!
