Nancy Drew Sleuths at Bouchercon 2010 Recap

Sleuth Lea With Her Collection Of
Nancy Drew Foreign Editions

Nancy Drew Sleuths had a booth at the Bouchercon 2010 mystery convention in San Francisco, I was on a Nancy Drew panel along with Penny Warner, Kate White, and Cornelia Read, and there was also a Nancy Drew 80th anniversary party.

I arrived to Oakland airport and Lea picked my mom and I up and gave us a great tour of her fabulous collection! Then a great tour around the San Francisco area including Coit Tower. We also stopped by the Yoda fountain at Lucas Films.

Totes and Bags--they were a hit!

In book #75, The Emerald-Eyed Cat Mystery, Nancy briefly visits San Francisco and goes to a restaurant in Chinatown where she wants to talk to the owner but he plies her with food and then hypnotizes her so she won't remember a thing! Lea, my mom and myself, plus Joanna and author Meredith Cole and her husband ate at Hunan Home's in Chinatown, shared several dishes, and then I tried to "hypnotize" Lea ;)

Bess says yum!

Our last big event was the Nancy Drew 80th anniversary party which was a come-and-go event in foyer of the Hyatt complete with mini cupcakes that Penny made picks for.

We had a mystery to solve at the party--see if you can solve it. Name one of Nancy Drew's famous cases and the villain she caught from the clues below--I'll post the solution in the comments in the coming days...

Sleuth Members Essentials Kit at our website!

Sleuths,

Up now in our "members only" section of our website - www.ndsleuths.com, at the bottom of the main "news" page is a Sleuth Members Essentials Kit consisting of pdf/doc files for your use with library/book displays, Nancy Drew talks you're giving, promoting your collections to local/national media, giving interviews to the press, book club meetings, and other projects/activities you're involved with.

The files encompass Nancy Drew's history, fun facts, famous quotes, trivia, things we've learned from Nancy, information about our group and our conventions and more! There's also a handy fill-in-the blank press release for your convenience if you want to highlight your collection to the local press and inspire a local collector piece. And a spiffy press release if you have a book club in your area you want to promote to the media. These files are perfect for printing out and hanging up for displays, for reference in giving talks, and there are flyers to print up to hand out to people for joining our group or subscribing to The Sleuth. You can open the files and print or directly save them to your hard drive for printing. The Press releases are Word Files, so you can add to them and customize them as need be.

This year we've had a lot more members involved in these kinds of activities who have been using my 80th press kits, Sleuth flyers, etc.. so I thought it would be a great idea to centralize all this info for you to be able to go and grab it when you need it. Keep me posted if you're using it and what's going on with your display/talk/event/etc. and I may be able to further help you promote it via my contacts with the publishers/licensees and even get products for raffles/giveaways/etc.

Carolina Sleuths 80th Nancy Drew Party

Our Carolina Sleuths from the NC/SC area who get together during the year for book club meetings held an 80th birthday party at Borders for Nancy Drew a couple of weeks ago! The event turned out so nice and benefited a local child in need as well.

Members displayed vintage Nancy Drew books and collectibles.

Nancy Drew Event at UC San Diego in August!

If you're nearby or in San Diego, the Univ. of San Diego is putting on a Nancy Drew exhibit in August - 1st through 31st with Nancy Drew collectibles/books on display. They're having live events on August 15 and 17 with lots of fun stuff going on including a "radio" interview with me where they'll phone me and we'll chat for the audience to hear!

Here's a blurb from their website which has the dates/times/directions:

"This summer, we celebrate all things Nancy Drew. Does she represent ''girl power'' better than any other pop icon? Is she our favorite feminist? This exhibit of Nancy Drew books, Nancy Drew memorabilia and serious Nancy Drew scholarship will feature a live event with refreshments prepared from the Nancy Drew Cookbook. At the live event, classic Nancy Drew mysteries will be performed in the style of old time radio drama entertainment. Actors from San Diego's Write Out Loud project will assist. Sounds & music provided by Scott Paulson and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra. A live phone-in radio interview with Nancy Drew expert Jenn Fisher is featured at the live events."

I hope some of you can make it--I'd love to get photos of the exhibit and live events if you can attend for The Sleuth and this Blog!
